Microscopy and Whole-Slide Image Viewers for Mac (2026)

Several vendor viewers never came to the Mac (ZEN, ImageScope, SlideViewer), so Mac users choose between free research tools, single-vendor Mac viewers, and SlideScope. Here is what each one opens, whether it runs natively on Apple silicon, and what it costs, checked in October 2026.

Not available on a Mac

  • ZEISS ZEN and ZEN lite: Windows only (Mac options).
  • Aperio ImageScope: Windows only, and no longer under active development (Mac options).
  • 3DHISTECH SlideViewer: Windows only; the old CaseViewer for Mac shows only server slides (Mac options).
  • ASAP: Windows and Linux; macOS support is described as preliminary.

One Apple silicon catch: JPEG-XR CZI files

Many ZEISS CZI files are JPEG-XR compressed, and QuPath’s documentation says Bio-Formats cannot decode JPEG-XR on Apple silicon, which affects Fiji and QuPath alike. The workarounds are converting on another computer or using an Intel build. SlideScope reads CZI with its own bundled JPEG XR decoder, so these files open on M-series Macs. See opening CZI files on a Mac.

How to choose

  • One vendor’s files only: start with that vendor’s free Mac viewer, if there is one (ND2, NDPI, IMS).
  • Analysis, scripting, whole-slide projects: QuPath or Fiji, free and open source.
  • Files from many vendors, measured and annotated in one app, counting without code: SlideScope, with files kept on your Mac.
  • A shared institutional library: OMERO, if your institution runs a server.

Format by format: CZI on Mac, SVS on Mac, ND2 on Mac, LIF, VSI.

Mac viewer questions

What is the best free microscopy image viewer for Mac?

For most research files, Fiji and QuPath are the standard free choices, both reading microscope formats through Bio-Formats. For one vendor’s files, the vendor’s Mac viewer may be enough: NIS-Elements Viewer for ND2, NDP.view2 for NDPI, Imaris Viewer for IMS. On Apple silicon Macs, JPEG-XR-compressed CZI files do not open through Bio-Formats.

Is there a ZEN lite or ImageScope for Mac?

No. ZEISS ZEN and ZEN lite run on Windows only, and Aperio ImageScope is Windows-only and no longer actively developed. On a Mac, open CZI and SVS files with SlideScope, QuPath or Fiji.

Can a Mac open whole-slide images such as SVS, NDPI and MRXS?

Yes. QuPath and SlideScope open SVS, NDPI and MRXS natively on macOS; NDP.view2 opens NDPI. For MRXS, copy the .mrxs file together with its data folder of the same name.

Do these viewers run natively on Apple silicon?

SlideScope, NIS-Elements Viewer for Mac, NDP.view2 and Imaris Viewer list Apple silicon builds; Fiji’s Latest build is native arm64; QuPath’s Apple silicon build is labelled beta.

Is SlideScope free?

SlideScope is a paid app with a free preview (open, measure and annotate a few of your own images) and a 3-day free trial.

Free preview: open, measure and annotate up to 5 of your own images. No account or card needed. Export, sharing, comparing slides and AI Analysis come with the 3-day free trial: $0 today, then $25/month unless you cancel before it ends. PayPal or card required, and you can cancel anytime from your account. Annual billing is available at $249.99/year, which works out to about two months free.
