What the table actually tells you

The free options are genuinely good. QuPath is free, cross-platform, actively developed, and reads more or less anything through Bio-Formats and OpenSlide. If cost is the deciding factor, start there and stop reading — no paid viewer, including ours, will beat free on format coverage alone.

Cross-platform is not a differentiator any more. QuPath ships Windows, macOS and Linux builds; NDP.view2 lists macOS 13 through 26. Anyone claiming to be the only viewer that runs on a Mac is not describing the current landscape.

The real split is scope, not platform. QuPath and ASAP are analysis platforms that also view. NDP.view2, SlideViewer and ZEN lite are vendor viewers, excellent for their own scanner's output and narrower elsewhere. OpenSlide is a library other tools are built on, not something you install to look at a slide.

One tool is a genuine trap. Leica's own ImageScope page states the software is no longer under active development and that support and OS compatibility may be limited. It still ranks near the top for “SVS viewer”, so people adopt it without seeing that notice. Don't start new work on it.

Where SlideScope fits

SlideScope earns its place in a narrow band: when a lab receives both scanner slides and acquisition files, and wants one lightweight application for both. A histology group that gets NDPI from a collaborator, SVS from a core facility, and CZI or ND2 from its own microscope currently needs two or three tools. SlideScope opens all of them on Windows and macOS, with calibrated measurements, metadata, annotations, and slides that open straight from a shared link.

If that is not your situation, one of the free tools above is very likely the better answer, and we would rather say so here than waste your trial.

Where another tool fits better

  • You need scripting, classifiers, or reproducible batch analysis. Choose QuPath. SlideScope quantifies standard objects with saved recipes, but it has no scripting or custom pipeline authoring.
  • You only ever open Hamamatsu slides. NDP.view2 is free for that and comes from the people who built the scanner.
  • You only ever open Zeiss CZI. ZEN lite is free from ZEISS, though it needs a ZEISS ID to download.
  • You are building software, not reviewing slides. Use OpenSlide directly.

What is the best free whole slide image viewer?

For most people, QuPath: free under the GNU General Public License, with builds for Windows, macOS on both Intel and Apple silicon, and Linux, and wide slide-format coverage. It is an analysis platform rather than a lightweight viewer, so it asks more of a reviewer who only wants to open a slide and measure a region.

Is Aperio ImageScope still supported?

No. Leica Biosystems states on its own ImageScope download page that the software is no longer under active development, and that technical support and updates including compatibility with the latest operating systems may be limited or unavailable. It remains a Windows-only download.

Which whole slide image viewers run on a Mac?

QuPath ships macOS builds for Intel and Apple silicon. Hamamatsu NDP.view2 lists macOS 13 through macOS 26. SlideScope requires macOS 14 or later. ASAP is officially Windows and Linux with preliminary macOS support contributed by the community. 3DHISTECH SlideViewer lists Windows requirements only, and Aperio ImageScope is Windows-only.

Do I need a whole slide image viewer, or an analysis platform?

If the task is opening a slide, navigating the pyramid, reading metadata, and measuring a region, a viewer is enough. If you need trained classifiers, scripting, batch pipelines, or reproducible quantification, choose an analysis platform such as QuPath and accept the heavier setup that comes with it.
