What a digital pathology viewer has to do

A whole slide image is not a photograph. A scanner captures a glass slide at 20x or 40x as a pyramid of tiles that can run to several gigabytes and more than 100,000 pixels on a side. A viewer that tries to load that as one image fails; a viewer that understands the pyramid opens it in seconds. Everything else a pathology team needs builds on that.

Digital pathology is fragmented by scanner vendor. Each manufacturer writes its own container, and a viewer that only reads one of them forces the lab to keep a second tool for every other scanner it receives slides from. Review tools built for pathology work

Side-by-side comparison. Open a second slide beside the first and both panes stay on the same region at the same magnification. Scale is matched in micrometres rather than by zoom factor, so an H&E scanned at 20x and its IHC restain scanned at 40x genuinely correspond. Panning or zooming either pane moves the other.

Calibrated measurement and annotation. Rulers, areas, and numbered markers use the scanner's pixel size and stay attached to the slide. Regions and measurements export as GeoJSON at full slide resolution, which QuPath, ASAP, and the Python tooling around them read directly, and as CSV for measurement tables.

Shared view links. A link carries the slide together with position, zoom, and plane. Installed copies of SlideScope open it with one click; anyone without the app sees what the link points at on the website first. This is what makes remote research review, tumour-board style discussion, and teaching practical without an image server.

Local Quantification. Segment nuclei, cells, or particles on your own computer and get calibrated counts, density per square millimetre, morphology, per-channel mean intensity, and marker positivity, with CSV, GeoJSON, and mask TIFF exports. AI Analysis. On request, SlideScope sends a compressed view of the current frame and returns a plain-language explanation of what is visible, in 14 languages. It asks before the first upload and never sends anything otherwise, as documented on the trust and data handling page.

Free digital pathology viewers, and when SlideScope is the better fit

Several capable viewers cost nothing, and this site says so plainly. Aperio ImageScope is free and reads SVS well, but it is Windows only and Leica no longer actively develops it. Hamamatsu NDP.view2 is free for NDPI slides; reading other vendors' formats needs the paid Plus edition. QuPath is open source, cross-platform, and the right tool for scripted analysis, at the cost of a steeper learning curve for people who only need to look at slides. ObjectiveView is a free vendor-neutral viewer for Windows and Mac.
