The files are enormous
A single scanned slide is routinely several gigabytes and tens of thousands of pixels across. Ordinary image viewers either refuse it or try to load the whole thing into memory.
Vendor viewers are per-vendor
Scanner software is written for the scanner's owner. Collaborators end up installing a different tool for every partner lab, and several of those tools are Windows-only.
Scale gets lost in transit
Once a slide has been screenshotted or converted carelessly, the micrometres-per-pixel calibration is gone and nobody downstream can measure anything honestly.
How SlideScope handles whole slide imaging files
Slide scanners write a pyramid: the same image stored at many resolutions so a viewer can fetch a coarse overview cheaply and progressively finer tiles as you zoom. SlideScope uses that pyramid directly. It loads only the tiles the current view needs, which is why a multi-gigabyte slide opens on a normal laptop without an image server, a PACS, or a pathology informatics deployment behind it.
The calibration the scanner recorded travels with the file, so measurements come back in micrometres rather than pixels. Metadata stays inspectable rather than buried, and annotations are saved against your account so a second reviewer opens the slide with the first reviewer's markers already in place.

Pathology imaging spans several distinct layers, and it helps to be precise about which one you are shopping for.
Acquisition is the scanner and its control software. SlideScope does not touch this layer.
Management is the image server, case management, and pathology informatics stack that stores slides and links them to specimens and reports. SlideScope is not a substitute for that.

Questions about slide scanner images
Which slide scanner formats does SlideScope open?
SlideScope opens Aperio SVS whole slide images and pyramidal TIFF and OME-TIFF exports, which covers most Leica and Aperio brightfield scanner output. It does not currently open Hamamatsu NDPI, 3DHISTECH MRXS, Philips iSyntax, or Olympus VSI natively.
What if my scanner writes a format SlideScope does not read?
Most scanning software can export to pyramidal TIFF or OME-TIFF. Exporting once at the scanner keeps the rest of the review workflow in SlideScope without a per-vendor viewer on every reviewer's machine.
Do gigapixel whole slide images open without a server?
Yes. SlideScope reads the image pyramid the scanner already wrote and loads only the tiles needed for the current view, so a multi-gigabyte slide opens on an ordinary laptop with no image server or PACS behind it.
Is SlideScope a pathology informatics platform?
No. SlideScope is the viewing and review layer. It does not manage cases, specimens, or lab information, and it is not a substitute for a pathology informatics system or an image management server.
