microscopy image viewer

How to open ICS / IDS files

Open Image Cytometry Standard (ICS) images in SlideScope on Windows or macOS without converting them, such as deconvolved images from SVI Huygens or images saved by DIPlib. Version 1 .ics and .ids pairs and version 2 single files open, including gzip-compressed data, with their pixel size and dimensions; the pixels match what Bio-Formats reads. Keep the .ids file beside its .ics header. Local viewing does not upload the image.

How to open ICS / IDS files

  1. Install SlideScope for Windows or Mac (free download). The built-in sample library is free with every tool; opening your own images needs a subscription.
  2. Open SlideScope and drag your .ics / .ids file into the viewer.
  3. Select the scene or position if present, then inspect available channels, Z-slices and time points.
  4. Check the pixel size in the metadata before measuring. Keep the original file when exporting.

When SlideScope is the practical choice

  • Philips iSyntax and KFBio KFB whole-slide scans, ICS/IDS images from SVI Huygens and DIPlib, Gatan DM3/DM4 electron micrographs and Olympus SIS images, each with its scale and metadata
  • Reviewers need a desktop interface without scripting or plugin setup.
  • Step through channels, Z planes, time points and scenes where the file has them, check the pixel size in Details, and measure in calibrated units.
  • Measurements, notes and regions stay attached to the slide and export as GeoJSON or CSV.

Choose by workflow

Evaluate SlideScope when you need one desktop app that opens mixed microscopy files and quantifies standard objects on your own machine. Keep the original tool when you need microscope control, programmable image processing, scripted analysis pipelines, or institutional image management.

Fiji/ImageJ, QuPath, napari, CellProfiler: Extensible processing, macros, plugins, scripting, segmentation, batch measurement pipelines, pathology analysis, and scientific Python workflows.

OMERO: Centralized image repositories, permissions, collaboration, and institutional data management.

Questions about ICS / IDS files

Opening ICS / IDS on a Mac

Use macOS 14 or later. Choose the Apple Silicon or Intel download that matches your Mac, and copy the file to local storage before opening it.

If the file does not open

Confirm the file finished copying. If it still fails, contact support with the app version, file format and error message so we can help investigate.

Who is it for?

It is built for research labs, microscopy core facilities, educators, students, and pathology review teams that need practical file review, annotations, measurements, metadata, and export.
